Turnkey implementation of a cell shoulder coating line for the BMW Gen6 battery storage system

This project involved the turnkey implementation of a cell shoulder coating line for the BMW Gen6 battery storage system. Responsibilities included both overall project management and operational site management across all project phases.  

The main tasks included planning and supervising pre-assembly in Straubing and detailed planning of commissioning in Debrecen. In addition, all quality approvals were prepared, planned, and carried out in a structured manner to ensure a smooth transition to series production. Another integral part was the creation of an overall schedule, including continuous tracking for transparent control of all milestones and dependencies.  

In addition, comprehensive supplier management was taken over, including the coordination of all trades involved. Construction site management was carried out primarily on site at the BMW plant in Debrecen, combined with intensive, cross-departmental coordination with the relevant specialist areas.  

Another focus was on planning and overall responsibility for the production start-up, including production support, with the aim of achieving a stable, quality-assured start to series production.

Initial situation

At the time of commissioning, the production line for cell shoulder coating for the BMW Gen6 battery storage system was still in the very early stages of planning. Initially, there was no reliable project basis, so the technical, scheduling, and organizational framework conditions had to be defined in close consultation with BMW.  

Based on these jointly developed fundamentals, detailed planning could be structured and continued. This meant that the focus in the initial phase was not only on the technical design of the line, but also on the creation of clear decision-making structures and binding project parameters as a prerequisite for targeted implementation.

Project objective

The objective of the project was the comprehensive planning and implementation of the cell shoulder coating line for the BMW Gen6 battery storage system and its timely commissioning. As the general contractor, we assumed overall responsibility for all project phases—from detailed planning and coordination of all trades involved to successful implementation on site.  

The focus was on the turnkey handover of a functional, process-stable cell coating line that meets all technical and quality requirements and enables a smooth transition to series production. 

Specific challenge

The project was characterized by demanding organizational and technical conditions. There was a recurring reluctance on the part of the customer to make decisions, which led to unanticipated delays and necessary rescheduling during the ongoing project. As a result, schedules had to be continuously adjusted and priorities flexibly realigned.  

In addition, the lack of technical maturity of some of the specified suppliers posed a significant challenge. Necessary rework, technical clarifications, and additional coordination increased the complexity of the implementation and required consistent risk management and close control of all project participants. 

Result

The commissioning of the cell shoulder coating line at the Debrecen site was successful. All planned storage types were technically upgraded and qualified for reliable operation.  

All planned quality inspections were successfully carried out and confirmed. The subsequent start of production proceeded according to plan and was stable, enabling the line to be transferred to series production on schedule. After completion of all project phases, the plant was successfully handed over to the operator.
